Boat Safely In Our Local Waters

Boating Safety on Fort Myers Beach

Fort Myers Beach offers some of the most beautiful waterways in Southwest Florida. Whether you’re cruising the back bay, exploring the Gulf, or island‑hopping, following proper boating safety practices keeps everyone protected and preserves our marine environment.

Why Boating Safety Matters

Our local waters include narrow channels, shallow flats, wildlife zones, and high‑traffic boating corridors. Understanding the rules — and preparing before you launch — helps prevent accidents and ensures a safe day on the water.

Essential Safety Requirements Life Jackets & Required Gear

Florida law requires:

  • One U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket per person on board
  • Children under 6 must wear a life jacket at all times on vessels under 26 feet
  • A fire extinguisher, sound‑producing device (whistle or horn), and visual distress signals on most vessels
