Working Waterfront Tour

Every Wednesday weather permitting.

The Ostego Bay Foundation Marine Science Center offers a Three-Hour Guided Tour. The cost for the Tour is $20.00 per adult and $10.00 for children over 6 years of age. Tour includes a presentation by our local historian and Florida Master Naturalist on the evolution of the San Carlos Commercial Fishing Industry, the discovery of the Florida Pink Shrimp and todays challenges to the industry. Plus a short video on how a shrimp boat works. Then onto the Working Waterfront. You’ll enjoy seeing Erickson & Jensen Seafood Packers, Supply House, Net Shop, Trico Seafood Market and unloading dock. See how the boats are unloaded, how the trawl doors are built, shrimp nets being hand-sewn and other important factors used in this unique industry. After visiting the docks, the tour continues to the Science Center for even more local knowledge. Bring your camera for a memorable experience! You’ve no doubt heard of the Jewel of the Nile, however we have jewels in our own back yard! The joy of living or visiting the beaches of the Florida Gulf Coast provides many intriguing benefits.

Malacology is the branch of invertebrate zoology that deals with the study of the Mollusca (mollusks or molluscs), the second-largest phylum of animals in terms of described species after the arthropods with conchology being the study of their shells.

Discover the amazing lifestyles of sea shells, sea urchins, sea stars, sea horses, sand dollars and more. The new and fascinating two-hour presentation includes Hands-on demonstrations, Touch Tank Experience, cleaning shells, and more. See how marine treasures found in Estero Bay and on Lovers Key play a role in nature and how they adapt to our unique environment. Call the Marine Science Center for availability and schedule. When: Saturdays from 10a.m. – 12p.m. Registration is required. Requested Donation: $15 per adult and $8 for ages 5 – 17 includes a take-away field guide. Call 239-765-8101 to register.
