What: Almost 500 top sailors from around the world – including 6 continents and 25 countries – will compete in the 22nd Hobie 16 Championships on Captiva Island. It’s the first time in 35 years this event has occurred in the United States. Sailors from around the world will compete in three world championship disciplines: Women’s, Youth and Open, and three additional disciplines; Masters Cup, Grand Masters Cup and Great Grand Masters Cup.
When: Nov. 1-16, 2019
Where: Sunset Beach, South Seas Island Resort, Captiva Island
Why: The athletes will compete on Hobie’s signature 16-foot catamaran sailboats. The event features a jam-packed schedule across the event’s 16-day duration, with plenty of opportunities to watch the races. The event features three world championship divisions: Women’s, Youth and Open; and three additional disciplines: Masters Cup, Grand Masters Cup and Great Grand Masters Cup.
Spectators are encouraged to drive to South Seas Island Resort to watch the races from Sunset Beach. Parking passes cost $5 a carload and spectators will receive a wristband. Food and beverages will be available at the beach (cash only). Also, Captiva Cruises (239-472-5300) will have sailboat cruises to the racecourses.
